This is 12 year old Chi-Chi the Chihuahua. He came in to our Bromsgrove surgery to see vet Alun Edwards. Alun was so impressed when he examined his mouth with the excellent condition of his teeth he asked me to tell you all about it. Chi-Chi’s owners brush his teeth everyday and as you can see they are looking great for his age.
Our vets always recommend regular brushing of your dogs teeth as it can prevent many health problems. Dental disease is one of the most common infectious illnesses suffered by our pets. The effects of dental disease can damage other areas of the body. The obvious infection around the teeth may be carried via the blood stream and lodge on the heart valves, in the kidneys or elsewhere.
There are signs and symptoms of poor oral health you can look out for
- Persistent bad breath
- Sensitivity around the mouth
- Pawing at the mouth
- Loss of appetite
- Plaque (not always visible unless stained)
- Bleeding, inflamed or receded gums
- Tartar (creamy-brown, hard material)
- Loose or missing teeth
- Difficulty eating and chewing food
Anyone at either of our surgeries can give you advice about brushing your dogs teeth, just call in or phone my staff.
