Most medications are dispensed during consultations and after examinations by the veterinary surgeon. Current legislation requires us to carry out regular re-examinations to confirm the usefulness of the medication, the accuracy of the dosage, and the absence of significant side effects.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, some medications may be dispensed without a physical exam or re-examination. This can be discussed during a telemedicine appointment with a Vet. Find out more.
Every case is different depending on the animal, the condition, and the medication prescribed. Most long-term conditions will require a veterinary re-examination at no more than 3-month intervals subject to the judgment of the clinician in charge of the case. This is to ensure your pet is receiving the right ongoing medication and care for their condition.
As above, some meds can be dispensed via a telemedicine appointment during the COVID-19 situation.
Prescriptions are available from any of our three practices. You may obtain Prescription Only Medicines Veterinary (POM-Vs) from your veterinary surgeon OR ask for a prescription and obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or pharmacy (charged at £19.01 for the first prescription and £12.08 for repeat prescriptions thereafter). Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe POM-Vs only for animals under their care. A prescription may not be appropriate if your animal is an in-patient or immediate treatment is necessary. You will be informed, on request, of the price of any medicine that may be dispensed for your animal. The general policy of this practice is to re-assess an animal requiring repeat prescriptions every 3 months, but this may vary with individual circumstances. The standard charge for a re-examination is £27. Further information on the prices of medicines is available on request.
