Look After Your Rabbit's Teeth

You can tell a lot about your rabbit's overall health just by looking at their teeth. A lot of the rabbit health problems encountered by our team at Clent Hills Vets originate from dental problems, so you can see why it's important to keep an eye on your rabbit's teeth.

Teeth misalignment and over-growth are common causes of dental problems and can occur at any age. If your rabbit is eating less, or being picky about the foods they will eat, you should seek veterinary help immediately as this is a serious health problem and could be rectified with some dental treatment. Rabbits can usually manage their tooth growth through diet, so be sure to talk to one of our nursing team about what you should feed your rabbit for a good dental workout.

The best thing you can do for your rabbit's dental health is to make sure they eat plenty of the fibrous foods that help keep their fast-growing teeth at the right length. Those front incisors grow at something like 2mm a week, so there's a lot of chewing to be done to keep them ground down. Learn more about rabbit dental care tips from our head nurse, Chrissie. If they're not at the right length it can have a knock-on effect for the rest of the teeth, causing problems such as impaction and inflammation. Here at Clent Hills Vets, we can help your rabbit if they're struggling to keep their growing teeth in check. If you're concerned at all, book a rabbit dental checkup - it could save your rabbit's life.
