If you’ve ever suffered from a seasonal allergy, you’ll know how miserable it can make you feel. And, despite their wild roots and love of the outdoors, our dogs can be allergic to the same environmental irritants that give people runny noses and sneezing fits.
If your dog shows any of these symptoms, Clent Hills Vets can provide some relief. Just drop into any of our three practices or contact us and the team will be happy to advise.
Top 10 allergy signs
Constant scratching is a sign of allergies, especially if it gets worse after you have been outside.
- Red, irritated skin
Just like humans, dogs can break out in rashes and hives when they are allergic to something. Check their belly and feet, especially between the toes, as these are the body parts that most often come into contact with allergens such as grass or pollen. Ears can also become inflamed.
- Obsessive licking
Constantly licking is another possible sign of an environmental allergy.
- Face rubbing
Often when this occurs it will be on the carpet or your pillows, furniture, etc. Some dogs will try to rub their whole body across a surface to alleviate the itchiness.
- Hair loss
If an allergy is not treated and your pet continues to be exposed to the cause, hair loss can occur.
- Hot spots
Hot spots occur when the skin is so inflamed that it becomes very red and can even bleed. There will also be hair loss.
- Red, smelly ears
If the allergy is affecting your dog’s ears, there will often be an odour.
- Head shaking
Another classic sign your dog’s ears are being bothered. They may become so sensitive that your pet shies away from you touching their head.
- Skin redness
Allergies may lead to red skin around the mouth, chin and paws. In some cases, also the anus.
- Puffy eyes
Another human symptom – dogs with allergies may get puffy, red eyes.
Now you’re equipped with your checklist, you can keep an eye out for signs of allergies and contact Clent Hills Vets if you spot any of them. Treatment is usually quite simple and will make all the difference to your pet’s comfort.
