Laser Therapy

A non-invasive, complementary treatment

We believe that most pets enjoy having laser therapy as the treatment itself and handling by our nursing team can be very relaxing. Ask our team about the many benefits of laser therapy.

Laser therapy and your pet

Laser therapy is a non-invasive, complementary treatment that we use to treat a variety of conditions in pets. It is excellent for relieving pain and reducing inflammation without any side effects. Mostly commonly, we use laser therapy for arthritis and to assist postoperative healing and wound management.

How does laser therapy work?

The laser stimulates the cells, making them work harder, producing more energy and increasing blood flow. This stimulation releases chemicals called endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, which are pumped out by the brain during times of pain and stress. The low-energy beams of light emitted by the laser machine are strong enough to stimulate the pressure points, but not strong enough to burn or damage the skin.

What is laser therapy used for?

Laser therapy is a non-invasive, safe method used to treat acute and chronic injuries, arthritis, sprains, strains, swelling due to back disc problems and musculoskeletal abnormalities. It can also help to regenerate nerve tissue after surgery.

What happens during a laser therapy session?

You are invited to join your pet for their laser therapy session as this can help them to relax. Your pet will be placed on a comfortable mat so that their treatment can begin. The nurse will use the laser wand to administer treatment to the affected areas and gently help the animal into the required positions, although we find with regular patients they tend to remember the routine and enjoy it.

Will my pet need to be sedated?

No. Laser therapy is a safe and non-invasive treatment that does not require your pet to be sedated. This means that no shaving of the affected areas is required and treatment can be carried out several times a day or week if necessary.

How should my pet feel after laser therapy?

If your pet is being treated for arthritis or an injury they should feel relieved from pain after each laser therapy treatment, how long for depends on your pet and the severity of their condition. You may find that your pet is willing to walk up stairs or pick up toys when they haven’t for some time. Overall, your pet should feel brighter after laser therapy as their pain should have subsided.

How often will my pet need laser therapy?

This all depends on your pet and how they respond to treatment. With arthritis, animals usually require treatment 2 -3 times per week to begin with and then this can be reduced over time.

Can I get laser therapy through my pet insurance?

We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm whether they cover arthritis and laser therapy as a treatment.
