Protecting your pet against parasites

Fleas, worms, mites, ticks and other parasites can be extremely irritating and harmful to your pet, and in some cases, can be fatal if left untreated. It’s important to treat your pet regularly with a combination of products that are effective against parasites.

Roundworm, Whipworm, Hookworm, Heartworm, Ear Mites, Lice, Sarcoptic and Demodectic Mange

Advocate® is a ‘spot on’ product, which is very effective in the treatment and prevention of fleas and other parasites on and in your dog. As well as killing fleas and their larvae it is effective against the most common external and internal parasitic problems your dog can acquire, with the exception of ticks and tapeworms.

Lungworm

Advocate® is one of the few products available for the treatment of Lungworm infections in dogs. Dogs can pick up Lungworm by eating larvae found in infected slugs and snails, from the ground or on their toys or fur. If left untreated Lungworm can be potentially fatal to your dog.

Tapeworm

Drontal or Droncit will protect your dog against tapeworm, a parasite that if left untreated can damage your dog’s insides and be transmitted to humans.

Treatment application

Drontal or Droncit is a tablet that needs to be given every six months, from six months of age. Advocate® should be applied to your dog every 30 days. It’s a liquid pipette that is put on the back of your dog’s neck. Our nurses are always happy to apply your pet’s parasite treatments, give them a cuddle and record their weight for you.

Profender® is also a ‘spot on’ product, which is effective in the treatment of tapeworm, a parasite that if left untreated can damage your cat’s insides and be transmitted to humans.

Advocate® should be applied to your cat every 30 days, it’s a liquid pipette that is put on the back of their neck. Profender® should be applied to your cat every six months. Our nurses are always happy to apply your pet’s parasite treatments, give them a cuddle and record their weight for you.

E.Cuniculi

E.cuniculi primarily affects rabbits and is a significant cause of disease, including kidney, eye and neurological disease. Occasionally it can be passed onto humans, especially if they are immuno-compromised (common with HIV and Cancer). Diagnosis can prove difficult sometimes and is often by process of elimination, however, once diagnosed we can provide a treatment called Panacur, which must be applied for 28 days.

Fleas

Rabbits can catch two type of flea, the common cat flea and the larger rabbit flea, which is slower moving and will primarily sit around the rabbit’s ears and head. Other household pets can also be affected by rabbit fleas. Symptoms will include scratching of the neck and biting of the area around the base of the tail. Fleas can spread myxomatosis so treatment is very important, not only of the rabbit but also the environment. We can provide specially licensed products for fleas in rabbits that will treat your pet effectively.

Flystrike

Flystrike is very common in rabbits and occurs during periods of warm weather. This disease is extremely distressing and can prove fatal if left untreated, often the only option is euthanasia as this is the kindest thing to prevent the rabbit from suffering.

Mites and lice

Cheyetiella is a skin mite that affects rabbits and is often referred to as ‘walking dandruff’ as it leaves areas of thick crusting and dandruff-like material on the skin. Rabbits can also be affected by ear mites that cause crusting and ulceration within the ear canals. The incidence of lice is relatively low in rabbits, but there will always be a risk. This is why it’s important that they are kept in a clean environment that is checked regularly.
